End of this school year

I have never been as happy to see a school year end as I am this year. The Mayor, Chancellor and their cuts and new policies have made this a terrible year for most. There has been undue stress put on parents, teachers and students by the unending stream of nonsense that comes from their offices. There is few words of truth to be heard from any of them. There are lies, cover ups and proclamations that are absurd and useless to all. This was the year they sought to ban DINOSAUR, birthday parties and yards with pools from our children's state exams and instead had talking pineapples being mauled and eaten by the other characters in the story. This was the year that there were "bulldogs" set in place to block Special Education parents from fighting for their children's rights. Rights that are mandated in LEGAL documents. These documents are tossed aside and only those who truly understand their rights and are willing to fight hard or find someone else to fight for them will get anyway. this was the year that DOE tried to sneak a detention center with the borough's most violent students onto a campus with 5 year olds and autistic children a stone's throw away with any warning to the parents or local community. Then they would place ADULTS, yes the high school students who are in the suspension centers and are level 4 are adults, into the already stressed out area where Mt Loretto based suspension center regularly terrorizes the community. This entire project was built on lies, lies and more lies that were slowly uncovered which is why it was abandoned. But not before Staten Islanders were publicly called vitriol. This is the year the Mayor so concerned about our weight and our children's weight banned all sorts of foods from schools however, has he seen the replacements? Only the poorest schools actually have true healthy foods, other schools are still serving cheese fries and chicken nuggets as always, but you can have vitamin water with it not juice which btw almost has the same calorie count. This was the year we all argued over common core standards. Is this actually about "lowering the expectations' rather than a real cure? The end of last school year we saw a young girl killed because Mr Bloomberg saw fit to take her yellow bus option away and as she ran for her city bus, she was hit by on coming traffic. However, our warriors fought the good fight and restored service for next year's kids, not without a tremendous fight. This year there was arguments about K-8, needing more north shore middle schools-yes there needs to be if you continue to open elementary schools, hello? Many schools went without music and art this year and cut down their physical education time which is odd at at time when old Bloomy is so worried about kids being fat...Our teachers are being publicly graded now, let's not forget that one!! If you are in a school where parents are out turning tricks all night and the kids are taking care of their siblings and have no time for HW and studying, it is YOUR fault teachers!! Post that failing grade for the world, its apparently YOU not doing your job. Of course the endless hours of test prep forced upon our kids should remedy any poor grades you may have. The fact that they are graduating illiterate, well, no matter, as long as they score well on the tests, that is all that matters. Now we have the possibility of a bus strike, which, oh yes, Mr Bloomberg scared everyone into thinking was happening months ago, but now could indeed be a reality. Of course we also have special education reform where parents are supposed to believe that the DOE will be good on their word and provide proper programs in EVERY neighborhood school for EVERY disability where it is needed and warranted. And those who are mainstreamed in this process, they will indeed get the proper support as will their teachers. This is all made possible by the NYC DOE. The place where teachers are treated like inmates because so many make the headlines these days for being criminals and totally inappropriate. Now let's all have a SUPER size sugar drink, some popcorn with butter and later go get a milk infused coffee drink to celebrate all that Nanny Bloomberg and company have put us through this year. Can't imagine what is planned for next year.
