Title: Odd and Even Days
Post by: Buzz on February 05, 2026, 10:08:54 AM

I have never understood the principle behind the odd and even fuel days for buses. I've been told it's to help gauge the timing of ordering fuel. I would think if everyone could just get fuel when they need it a pattern would emerge soon enough which woud accomplish the same thing. The last I talked to the shop manager in the Bronx, which admittedly was a few years ago, those buses could fuel whenever. Of course they have about half as many buses but that shouldn't matter.

And don't even get me started about WHEN fuel is dropped!!

It also is almost impossible to fuel on mandatory days when on a trip run too...gas up Wednesday but you have a trip Thursday and Friday one of which is off Island and you don't have time to gas Monday prior to going your AM because you gotta go across the island for your first pick up.....

What kind of bs is that we have to worry about the bus, via, traffic, trips, ezpass ,no parent at stops ,being scheduled to trips and school at the same time and now we have to fuel on certain days 🤣🤣🤣🤣

This really isn't a new rule but apparently it's being newly enforced more stringently. It's been the "rule" for over 3 decades. But it started when there was usually only 1 fuel pump in use (though there were 2 pumps) located alongside the back of the shop. Smaller tank and only diesel.

Now there are 2 pumps in use and much larger tanks with 2 types of fuel. Why is this still necessary???

It used to be that special ed buses ... and I think even trip buses ... could fuel any day, don't know if that's still the case  ... as well as spares. Any day except Friday, of course.  Even the pope relented and said you can eat meat on Friday but  THOU SHALL NOT GET FUEL ON FRIDAY!!!   ;D  ;D  ;D

With all the extra work guys are doing and the Gas busses eating the fuel up like crazy odd and even days should go out the window ! PS you're right about the trip runs being able to get fuel whenever .. the rules change Like the wind in this place!

You're so right about the extra mileage and the consumption of gas buses. How any money was saved by buying gas vehicles is beyond me.

I mean it just doesn't make sense to make it more difficult to be able to do your job.

I'll give you a little insight of why this came about,This past Monday (even day) I was the first bus hanging back just past the  shop waiting for the bus  ahead to turn into the pumps so I can move up . for some reason everyone decided to come back that  morning and proceeded to make a complete circle around the whole yard and down the driveway, blocking the shop bays and blocking the pumps so the first bus couldn't turn into the pumps  I couldn't move up because I couldn't get past. The buses lined up in front of the shop bays and busses just trying to enter or exit the yard had no where to go causing a traffic jam in the yard which did not go over to well with The powers that be !
(We are our own worst enemy and this is the outcome) 🚌

Well thanks for your insight, LMAO, and certainly the yard can't be jammed up like that. (And who the fuck would wait on a line that long?!!)  But that was unusual and this has been a "rule" long before the incident you mentioned.

I was denied the other day when there was only one bus behind me because the fueler was afraid of getting yelled at. Of course I don't blame him and didn't want the kid to get in trouble but there should be some room for common sense.

Curious, LMAO. How did they break up the log jam? Just send odd buses off the line?

And by the way, this could have totally been avoided that Monday if there was fueling on Friday. (God forbid!!)

Also, if it's a holiday Monday, when can those buses fuel? Have to wait for Wednesday? With, say 1/4 tank???

Easy my friend your little fingers will get tired  ;D ! To answer your question, they doubled up the lines like they do on inspection day so they could open up the front of the yard, but I did hear guys were  there for a very long time🚌

It's because right after the morning run the Fuel truck was there plus there was a Pick going on so guys who were there for the pick also were fueling up . It was a chaotic perfect storm !

That's really a good explanation! So for something that won't happen again in a hundred years the fuelers have to be scared to break the "rule."

And I could never understand why the fuel truck can't come between 1 and 2 or after 5. Pioneer is the customer. It should be at their convenience.

I thought the last to pick were the matrons ... a week ago Friday. Did that change?
