Quote from: PROUD MEMBER on September 20, 2024, 09:41:20 PMGreed may have something to do with it, but it's not that "simple" to stop covering work.
If you stop covering work after just one day, it can be considered insubordination and you could find your job on the line.
If you don't believe me, ask your delegate, ask your shop steward, ask your general manager or just read your contract.

Proud, are you being forced to cover extra work? Or have you been volunteering for years and your lifestyle has become accustomed to the extra money?

The availability of extra work is beneficial to drivers who would like the opportunity to make extra money. However, the distribution of the work by the management and the compensation should be fair for all parties.

Well I see it as "ALL" of my employment lost in the last 18 months, which I made a weekly claim for, was due to Lack of Work. Just because it isn't a straight 18 months out of work does not make the answer NO. "ALL" of my employment lost in the last 18 months, and all of my weekly claims, WAS due to "Lack of Work" intermittently!

Every week that I claimed in the last 18 months was because of "Lack of Work". So for me the answer was YES. The claim was approved.

I don't see it as a slap to Anthony if post 2013 drivers do not/can not attend the meeting. A passing thank you to Anthony and those in his office, as well as any delegate or board member that visits should be sufficient for a job well done. The majority of pre and post 2013 drivers will be satisfied with the outcome of these negotiations and of the effort of the union, owners and the City. In regards to a slap, did Anthony slap the post 2013 drivers with his involvement over the years?  Lets forget the "slapping" reference and be proud of the accomplishment.

QuoteIf he was trying that hard he would ask the owners and 1181 if someone from his administration or even himself could sit in on the negotiations.
Are you sure that is not happening?  A city mediator may be attending for advice to both sides.

Back in 2013 we were "convinced" by our shop steward / union that this was it and we should take it. It was terrible advice then, and we are paying for it now. All of our future compensation and benefits (retired members) will eventually have to be reduced because the shortage of members contributing over the last 10 years. In simpler terms, Pensions are in jeopardy!!!

As for the extra work, drivers will not stop doing it until the union tells us all not to do it. And some will still do it.

Buzz, if you have access to the list of schools receiving service before Sept 7, can you post it?

Claim today as you normally would. File a new claim tomorrow for a new year. Claim for new year starting next Sunday. You will not be paid next week due to waiting week.

QuoteAfraid of the unknown(the 219)  and Stockholm syndrome for the owners.....bad combination when every union is doing well with new contracts or straight cleaning up
Our union does not negotiate with the City, we are not City employees. We should not expect what the City employee unions are achieving.

When the "New" hires outnumber the "Legacy" members, maybe they should vote to dismantle the "Legacy" benefits above theirs, so we are ALL under one contract. Then maybe there will be bargaining power instead of questioning how to vote  on a strike vote. Dual contract selfishness will disappear.

"So, understand, it's not just for the "new" people ... hired since 2013 ... that we would authorize a strike. The legacy people are being offered shit as well and could conceivably even lose some of what we gained without the threat of a strike. "

So the "Legacy" members are now concerned about receiving what they forced on "New" hires?  Oh, OK!!

OK, we made some progress with the times to a more casual look. Next step should be dark blue embroidered polo shirts, then, optional shorts after June 1.

I agree, thanks Buzz for the info and opportunity this site provides. The lack of participation may be due to the disappointment with the Union, the Reps/Steward, selfishness of co-workers, and the management style we all experience on a daily basis. Just a thought.

All 2013 hires should vote to strike if they are not "caught up". They are the future of the union, and the pension. We need alot more of them to be hired so the extra work can stop and all of our financial futures is better guaranteed.
