Work Related / Strike Possible This Time Around
November 25, 2022, 04:47:21 PM

I don't know how many of you had a chance to chat with our delegates ... Anthony Cordiello and John Cleary ... in the drivers room last Friday morning (Arthur Kill).

I did, and be assured our local has heard the membership loud and clear as to what we're expecting next contract ... especially those hired since 2013.

When I asked if they thought they would get a strike vote if the contractors didn't "play ball" there was no doubt in Anthony's mind that that a strike vote would carry. His reasoning is, there are now more members hired since 2013 than before that year.

Pretty much puts the ball in the junior drivers' court if it comes down to that. Let's hope it doesn't. It's not fun.

(p.s. - They did point out that you can now get unemployment after being on strike for 2 weeks, instead of 8 weeks like back in 2013. Remains to be seen how long our benefits will remain intact, however. I neglected to ask.)

Work Related / Bus Delays Highest in 5 years
November 22, 2022, 09:19:47 AM
"But officials also acknowledged that getting drivers back on the job may be a challenge after thousands of them were furloughed in the wake of school building closures."

"They were laid off, in a worldwide pandemic, with no wages, no pension contributions, and, above all else, no health care," said Kevin Moran, the education department's chief school operations officer. "And so when we talk about the driver shortage and trying to bring people back into the system, we have a fair bit of work to do to re-establish trust."

There's something sadistically satisfying about knowing the city fucked itself worse than it fucked us.

Work Related / Just Found Out Our Dental SUCKS!!
November 19, 2022, 09:28:50 PM

Never knew there was a $2,000 cap per person per year on our dental plan until now that I need implants for 15K. Holy shit!

By the way, this wouldn't be necessary if my previous dentist wasn't neglectful in his care of my teeth. I went to this guy for at least 10 years and I blame him totally for now needing implants due to his incompetence. I had no way of knowing. I thought he was the greatest.

I know others of you go to this guy ... it's SETH WEINER. Do yourselves a favor just for the hell of it ... visit another dentist for a check up and full mouth x-rays. See what Seth's incompetence might be doing to your mouth. Thank me later.

I should sue the scumbag.

Work Related / Check Junior High Early Dismissal Times
November 07, 2022, 03:10:20 PM
The times posted in the window for public school junior high early dismissal Wednesday seem to be derived from the COVID schedule of a couple of years ago when some schools shortened their days. Suggest you check with your school so you're not waiting there a half-hour ahead of time.

For instance, I.S. 24 will be getting out 11:17, not 10:50. (Office made the change thanks to moi.)

I know ... you would think early dismissal would be 11:20 being regular dismissal is 2:20 but their Facebook page says 11:17.

Work Related / Office Needs to Discard Old L/R Sheets!
November 05, 2022, 12:09:56 AM
Yesterday was, I believe, only the third time in almost 29 years that I called in sick. Knowing I handed in an updated L/R sheet in September I felt confident that whomever covered my run ... or parts thereof ... would have no problem whatsoever.

Little did I know that not only was the updated L/R sheet never put in the file, but there were 2 previous versions plus a "documented" run sheet with number of children and time corrections on it. What that was doing in there is anybody's guess.

Having heard there were discrepancies in whatever the other drivers were given, I printed out the same L/R sheet and brought it in with me this afternoon. It was then that I learned that it was never put in the file back in September and of the existence of the other crap in there.

I had given the updated L/R sheet to the new dispatcher, Mike ... who has already quit ... and asked if he knew what it was. He said yes, but I told him anyway that it was a left-right sheet. Then I asked if he knew what to do with it. He said yes, but I told him anyway to replace the one in the drawer with this one. Didn't happen.

So this afternoon I made sure that only the updated version was put in the file and the other crap in there was thrown away.

Sorry to whomever was given incorrect instructions yesterday.

Does your radio sometimes have so much static that you can't understand what's being said? Is it the base's problem and everybody hears it or is it just my unit?

Work Related / Remembering "Flip" - Sandy 10 years ago
October 29, 2022, 03:50:28 PM
It was 10 years ago that we lost driver John "Flip" Filipowicz and his son who both died in hurricane Sandy.

I lost almost everything I owned but at least I'm still here to tell about it. I didn't know John well but R.I.P. and condolences to his family.

Although we're told repeatedly to come back after the morning run there are always those few who insist on getting inspected before they go out in the a.m. Don't complain about getting the violation. The union can't defend you. You bought it! COME BACK TO GET INSPECTED AFTER THE MORNING RUN!!

Work Related / Remember Board of Ed Decals?
October 22, 2022, 11:56:28 PM
Years ago all buses that did "Board of Education" work (as it was called back then) had decals affixed to the rounded cowl panel just forward of the door ... where bus numbers are now.

Wonder why the "Department of Education" didn't continue the tradition? It felt more "official."  ;D  ;D  ;D  Looked like this ...

Work Related / No Sarcasm! NICO CARES!!
October 22, 2022, 01:10:52 AM
Apparently some drivers think I'm being sarcastic reproducing the sign in the Shop Steward's office that says, "NICO CARES."

Nothing could be further from the truth. First noticed the sign at the end of last year and it just struck me funny. That's all.

Nico is a truly fine American and an upstanding and respected  union brother. That's why I say ...

Work Related / Via Bracket Clusterfuck
October 19, 2022, 03:36:37 PM
Okay so there was a notice saying that if you needed a bracket for the Via phone, to come back after the morning run.

Turns out, there are 130 buses that need brackets. Now, lets do the math:

It takes about 1/2 hour per bus. It used to take only 10 minutes, a supervisor explained to me, but now they have to install them a different way in order not to void bus warranties. (And the bus before mine took all of 45 minutes!)

So, there are only 3 installers. Three installers doing about 8 buses each in 4 hours equals 24 buses per day. I'm assuming they get 1/2 hour for lunch. They started around 9 and most buses will have to leave by 1:30.

Now, the question is: How many days will it take to complete installation on 130 buses? I'm not giving you the answer, but it sure as shit isn't ONE.

Un-fuckin-real.
