Get Your Card Signed ... But Why?

For the first time in many years, on Tuesday, being over 2 hours late for stops and schools, I had to go in to those schools to get my card signed ... as we are instructed to do. I found myself asking myself, "why?"

There was a time when this was the only proof that you showed up to a school even though you picked up no students. But since we now have on-board GPS systems plus the Via phones, don't they provide much better proof? Getting a card signed means you went to the school ... but it doesn't verify that you made all the stops.  Checking the GPS would be proof positive if there was any reason to question it.

Unless I'm missing something, in this day and age, the only thing getting your card signed does is make you even later for your next school. Am I wrong?

I mean I realize that if a school said a bus didn't show the office could say "Well so-and-so signed the card."  But that doesn't mean the driver did the stops.
